An acronym for Bona Fide Occupational Qualification, a defense to an employment discrimination claim. It allows an employer to discriminate based on age, religion, sex, or national origin if such a characteristic is genuinely necessary for the performance of a particular job. This exception is narrowly construed and rarely applies to race or color.
