To establish the truth or validity of a fact or assertion through evidence and logical argument in a legal proceeding. This requires presenting sufficient evidence to satisfy the applicable standard of proof, such as beyond a reasonable doubt in criminal cases or a preponderance of the evidence in civil cases. The burden of proof rests on the party making the claim.
