Cleaning fee

A charge specified in a lease or rental agreement that a landlord assesses against a tenant to cover the cost of returning a property to its original state of cleanliness. The enforceability of such a fee depends on state and local landlord-tenant laws, which dictate whether it can be non-refundable or must be deducted from a security deposit with an itemized statement of costs. Some jurisdictions prohibit non-refundable cleaning fees entirely.
