A common law right of a surviving husband to a life estate in all of the real property owned by his deceased wife, provided they had children born alive capable of inheriting the estate. This right has largely been abolished or replaced by statutory provisions for spousal inheritance in modern legal systems. It mirrored the wife's dower right.
