Derivative work

A new creative work based on one or more pre-existing works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture version, sound recording, art reproduction, abridgment, or condensation. The derivative work must incorporate original, copyrightable authorship in addition to the pre-existing material. Copyright law grants the owner of the original work the exclusive right to prepare derivative works.
