Drug scheduling

The classification of controlled substances into five schedules based on their potential for abuse, accepted medical use, and safety or dependence liability. Schedule I drugs, such as heroin, have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, while Schedule V drugs have the lowest potential for abuse. This system is established by the Controlled Substances Act in the United States.
