Controlled substance

A drug or chemical whose manufacture, possession, use, and distribution are regulated by government legislation due to its potential for abuse or addiction. These substances are categorized into schedules based on their medical use, potential for abuse, and safety. The Controlled Substances Act in the United States establishes five schedules for such substances.
