Duty to mitigate

A legal principle requiring a party who has suffered harm to take reasonable steps to minimize the extent of their damages. This obligation applies in contract disputes, tort claims, and other areas of law. Failure to mitigate losses can result in a reduction of the compensation recoverable from the breaching or offending party.
