Mitigation of damages

The legal principle requiring a plaintiff who has suffered a loss due to another's wrong to take reasonable steps to minimize the extent of their damages. A plaintiff cannot recover for losses that could have been avoided through reasonable effort. This duty applies in both contract and tort law.
