Nominal damages

A small monetary award granted to a plaintiff in a lawsuit where a legal wrong has occurred, but no actual financial loss or injury was proven. These damages acknowledge the violation of a right without compensating for substantial harm. An award of one dollar is a common example of nominal damages.
