Treble damages

A form of punitive damages awarded in certain legal actions, where the amount of actual monetary damages suffered by the plaintiff is multiplied by three. This type of award is intended to punish the defendant for egregious conduct and deter similar actions in the future. Specific statutes, such as antitrust laws or patent infringement laws, authorize the award of treble damages.
