To obtain a final judgment in a lawsuit for money, damages, or the possession of property. A plaintiff who wins a case is said to recover the amount awarded by the court from the defendant. This recovery can include compensatory damages for losses, punitive damages to punish wrongdoing, and sometimes attorney's fees and court costs, depending on the specific claims and governing statutes.
