Exemplary damages

Monetary compensation awarded in civil lawsuits beyond actual losses, intended to punish the defendant for egregious conduct and deter similar actions by others. These damages are not meant to compensate the plaintiff but rather to make an example of the defendant. Courts typically award them in cases involving malice, fraud, or reckless disregard for the rights of others.
