Punitive damages

Monetary awards granted by a court in addition to compensatory damages, intended to punish the defendant for egregious or malicious conduct and to deter similar behavior in the future. These damages are not meant to compensate the plaintiff for their losses but rather to serve as a deterrent. They are typically awarded in cases involving fraud, intentional torts, or gross negligence.
