Duty to retreat
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001787
A legal requirement in some jurisdictions that an individual facing a threat of harm must attempt to avoid the confrontation, such as by moving away, before using deadly force in self-defense. This duty does not apply if the individual is in their own home or place of business, under what is known as the castle doctrine. Many states have adopted 'stand your ground' laws, eliminating this duty in public places.
