To abandon a legal duty, obligation, or person, often with the intent of never returning or fulfilling the responsibility. In military law, desertion is a serious offense involving unauthorized absence from duty with the intent to remain away permanently. In family law, it can refer to a spouse leaving the marital home without justification or intent to return, potentially impacting divorce proceedings.
