Desert

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004943

A region characterized by extremely low annual precipitation, leading to sparse vegetation and a limited capacity to support life. These arid environments are defined by their lack of moisture rather than by high temperatures, as cold deserts also exist. A common threshold for a region to be classified as a desert is receiving less than 250 millimeters (10 inches) of precipitation per year.
