Enclosure (inclosure)

The act of fencing off or otherwise privatizing common land or open fields, historically prevalent in England from the 16th to 19th centuries. This process converted communal agricultural land into individually owned and managed parcels. Enclosure acts often required parliamentary approval and significantly altered rural land ownership patterns and social structures.
