Treasure trove

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004968

Valuables, such as currency, gold, or silver, discovered concealed in a location where the original owner is unknown and presumed to have hidden them for later retrieval. Under common law, the finder of the property was granted ownership rights against all others except the true owner. Modern statutes in many jurisdictions have altered this rule, often awarding ownership to the owner of the land where the items were found or requiring the property to be turned over to the state.
