Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

An independent agency of the United States government that maintains stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system. It insures deposits in banks and thrift institutions for at least $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. The FDIC was created in 1933 in response to the Great Depression.
