An acronym for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, an independent agency of the United States government that protects bank depositors. It insures deposits in eligible banks and savings associations up to at least $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. The FDIC also examines and supervises financial institutions for safety and soundness.
