Federalism

A system of government in which power is divided between a central national authority and constituent political units, such as states or provinces. In this structure, both the national government and the regional governments exercise sovereign powers over their respective spheres of influence. The U.S. Constitution establishes a federalist system, enumerating the powers of the federal government and reserving all other powers to the states under the Tenth Amendment.
