Police powers

The inherent authority of a government to enact laws and regulations to protect the public health, safety, morals, and general welfare of its citizens. This power is the basis for most state and local legislation, including zoning laws, public health codes, and criminal statutes. In the United States, the Tenth Amendment reserves these powers primarily to the individual states.
