Felon in possession

A criminal offense committed by an individual who has previously been convicted of a felony and is subsequently found to be in possession of a firearm or ammunition. Federal law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1), prohibits such possession. Many states also have similar laws, with penalties varying by jurisdiction.
