Garnishment

A legal procedure through which a portion of a debtor's wages or assets held by a third party is seized to satisfy a debt. This court order directs the third party, such as an employer or bank, to withhold funds and remit them directly to the creditor. Wage garnishments are subject to federal and state limits, such as those set by Title III of the Consumer Credit Protection Act.
