Wage attachment

A court-ordered legal process directing an employer to withhold a specified portion of an employee's earnings for the payment of a debt. Also known as wage garnishment, it is used to collect on judgments for obligations such as unpaid taxes, defaulted loans, or child support arrears. The Consumer Credit Protection Act sets federal limits on the amount garnished, generally capping it at 25 percent of an individual's disposable earnings for most types of debt.
