Arrears

Money that is owed and should have been paid earlier, representing a past-due debt. The term is frequently used in the context of legally mandated periodic payments, such as child support, alimony, rent, or annuity payments that have been missed. For example, a court order may require a party to pay both current child support and an additional amount to cover the accumulated arrears.
