Preferred dividend

A distribution of a company's earnings paid to holders of preferred stock, which has priority over dividends paid to common stockholders. These payments are a fixed amount, stated either as a percentage of the stock's par value or as a specific dollar figure per share. If a company issues cumulative preferred stock, any missed dividend payments, known as dividends in arrears, must be paid out before common stockholders receive any dividends.
