Preferred stock

A class of ownership in a corporation that has a higher claim on assets and earnings than common stock. Holders of this stock receive fixed dividend payments before common shareholders and have priority in receiving assets upon liquidation. Unlike common stock, preferred stock usually does not carry voting rights.
