Dividend

A distribution of a portion of a company's earnings, decided by its board of directors, to a class of its shareholders. Payments can be made in cash, as additional shares of stock, or in the form of other property. The declaration of a dividend creates a legal obligation for the corporation to pay the announced amount to shareholders of record on a specific date, making it a debt of the company.
