Arrest

The act of taking a person into custody by legal authority, thereby depriving them of their freedom of movement, for the purpose of holding them to answer for a criminal charge. An arrest must be based on probable cause, which is a reasonable belief that the person has committed a crime. Following an arrest, the individual is informed of their Miranda rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney.
