Preliminary hearing

A proceeding in criminal law held after an arrest but before a trial, where a judge determines if there is sufficient probable cause to believe a crime has been committed and that the defendant committed it. The purpose is to screen out cases where the evidence is too weak to proceed to trial. If probable cause is found, the defendant is bound over for trial.
