Prejudgment interest

Interest that accrues on a monetary award from the date the cause of action arose or the injury occurred until the date a judgment is rendered by a court. This interest compensates the plaintiff for the loss of use of money during the period leading up to the judgment. The availability and rate of prejudgment interest are typically governed by state statutes.
