Pregnancy Discrimination Act

A 1978 amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits sex discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. The law requires that women affected by these conditions be treated the same for all employment-related purposes, including employee benefits, as other workers not so affected but similar in their ability or inability to work. It applies to employers with 15 or more employees.
