Prejudgment interest

The interest that accrues on a monetary award from the date the cause of action arose or the loss occurred until the date a judgment is entered by a court. This interest compensates the plaintiff for the loss of use of money during the period leading up to the judgment. The calculation of prejudgment interest varies by jurisdiction and type of claim.
