General counsel

The chief lawyer of a legal department within a corporation or governmental agency. This executive provides legal advice to senior management, oversees all legal affairs such as litigation and compliance, and manages both in-house lawyers and outside counsel. The general counsel, also known as the chief legal officer (CLO), reports directly to the chief executive officer and serves on the executive management team.
