Counsel

  1. A legal adviser, such as an attorney or a team of attorneys, who represents a client in a legal matter. Counsel provides legal advice, drafts documents, and advocates for the client in negotiations or court proceedings. The right to counsel in criminal cases is guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution for defendants facing imprisonment.

  2. Legal advice; a term also used to refer to the lawyers in a case.
