Gideon v. Wainwright (1963)

A landmark United States Supreme Court case that ruled that the Sixth Amendment's guarantee of a right to assistance of counsel applies to criminal defendants in state courts via the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision established that states must provide attorneys to indigent defendants charged with felony offenses.
