Right to counsel

A constitutional guarantee that an individual accused of a crime has the assistance of an attorney for their defense. This right is enshrined in the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. If a defendant cannot afford an attorney, the court must appoint one for them in felony cases and some misdemeanor cases.
