Initial appearance

A defendant's first court appearance after arrest, where a judge informs them of the charges, their rights, and determines bail. During this proceeding, the defendant may also be appointed legal counsel if they cannot afford an attorney. Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 5 governs initial appearances in federal courts.
