General appearance
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002282
An action taken by a defendant that acknowledges the court's authority over them for the purposes of a lawsuit. By making a general appearance, such as filing an answer to the complaint without objecting to jurisdiction, the defendant waives any challenges to the court's personal jurisdiction. This contrasts with a special appearance, which is made for the sole purpose of contesting the court's jurisdiction over the defendant.
