Reynolds v. Sims (1964)
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004327
A landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that established the principle of "one person, one vote" for state legislative districts. The Court ruled that the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment requires that seats in both houses of a bicameral state legislature be apportioned on the basis of population. This ruling invalidated apportionment schemes in most states that gave disproportionate representation to rural areas.
