Gross estate

The total fair market value of all assets owned by a deceased individual at the time of their death, before any deductions for debts, expenses, or exemptions. This includes all property, real or personal, tangible or intangible, wherever situated. The gross estate is the starting point for calculating federal estate tax liability.
