Houseburning

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002470

The common-law offense of maliciously burning one's own dwelling, treated as a misdemeanor when the house stood close enough to others to endanger them. It was distinct from common-law arson, which required burning another person's dwelling, and many modern arson statutes now cover it by extending liability to the burning of one's own property.
