Scintilla
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004398
A very slight or minute amount of evidence. Under the modern standard in federal courts and most states, a mere scintilla of evidence is not enough to defeat summary judgment or a directed verdict, because the evidence must allow a reasonable jury to find for the party. An older scintilla rule, now largely abandoned, treated any evidence at all as enough to reach the jury.
