Directed verdict

A ruling by a judge in a jury trial that instructs the jury to return a specific verdict because no reasonable jury could find otherwise based on the evidence presented. This occurs when one party has failed to present sufficient evidence to support their claim or defense. It effectively takes the decision out of the jury's hands.
