Food or shelter provided to a person by someone else, or received because someone else pays for it. This form of non-cash assistance, abbreviated as ISM, is considered unearned income by the Social Security Administration for the purpose of calculating Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The value of ISM is determined by specific rules, such as the presumed maximum value rule, which can reduce a recipient's monthly SSI payment.
