Supplemental Security Income, a federal program administered by the Social Security Administration that provides financial assistance to aged, blind, or disabled individuals who have limited income and resources. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance, eligibility for SSI does not depend on prior work history or contributions to Social Security. It is a needs-based program funded by general tax revenues.
