Incompetency

The legal determination that an individual lacks the mental capacity to understand the nature and consequences of their actions or to manage their own affairs. This finding can render a person unable to stand trial, enter into contracts, or make medical decisions. A court typically makes a formal declaration of incompetency after a hearing.
