Compos mentis

A state of having a sound mind, memory, and understanding sufficient to comprehend one's actions and their legal consequences. A person in this state possesses the mental capacity required to enter into binding agreements, execute a valid will, or stand trial for a criminal offense. The legal standard for capacity varies depending on the specific act; for example, the capacity to make a will (testamentary capacity) is a different standard from the capacity to manage one's own financial affairs.
